Architecture Patterns in Swift Mobile Apps

Architecture choices affect how maintainable, testable, and shippable your Swift app is. Here is a quick look at the common patterns.

MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel)

MVVM fits SwiftUI well: the View is your SwiftUI hierarchy, the ViewModel holds state and logic, and the Model represents your data. Mark properties with @Published in the ViewModel so the View picks up changes automatically.

Clean Architecture

Layer your app into domains, use cases, and presentation. Keep business logic independent of UI and frameworks. Dependency injection (constructors or a container) makes testing simpler and swapping implementations easy.

Coordinator Pattern

Coordinators handle navigation flow. View controllers and views don't push each other; instead, a coordinator decides which screen comes next. This keeps navigation logic centralized and views reusable.

Combining Patterns

Many teams use Clean Architecture at the core and MVVM at the presentation layer, with coordinators or SwiftUI navigation managing flow. Start simple and introduce more structure as the app grows.
